Wherefore I beseech you, be ye followers of me (KJV)
Then: Corinthians knew Christ's statement "Follow me." To hear Paul, one who faithfully followed Christ, say the same thing was not surprising. In imitating Paul, they would also be imitating Christ. Baker (p. 74), brings up the teaching methods of that world. All the philosophers expected students to show through words and deeds a full acceptance and understanding of their teachings. Baker further points out Paul's ability to walk the talk. He lived his beliefs.
Now: We are blessed with centuries of people who have dedicated their lives to following Christ and doing their utmost to be like him. We have the thoughts of people who read the gospels, the first century letters written by people who walked with our Lord, the books of the Old Testament, and other early writings. This blog draws heavily on those who specifically concentrated on knowing everything possible about Paul's letters to the Corinthians. The writings deepen our knowledge of Christ, God the Father, and the Holy Spirit. They encourage us to persevere and not quit. They sensitize us to being able to recognize the Lord's truth in a fallen world and open our minds to hearing him speak to us directly. Thanks be to him for his unspeakable gift. Thanks be to him for loving us.
